New Audi RS6 Avant Review, the soul of a supercar

For four generations, the RS6 Avant has always been the most desired Audi because it generates, in its spirit and DNA, a dimension of its own in the world of sportiness.

It simply translates what dads in a hurry are looking for: absolute performance to transport their family, luggage, etc., in a powerful, physical and controlled car.

Story of an unclassifiable family car

Code name "C5". In 2002, the very first generation of RS6 Avant appears. It gives itself the means to achieve its ambitions since it uses and abuses a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 that already develops 450 hp. This power enabled it to reach the first 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The car is a sensation because it puts forward the beautiful idea "that a sports car can have room for four or five people, a large trunk and enough to answer the performance specialists with breathtaking accelerations".

Two generations have followed, first in 2008, the C6 made the change with the integration for the first time in a family wagon of a 5.0-liter TFSI V10 with 580 hp and 650 Nm of torque. A true F1 engine that allowed it to reach 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

However, environmental standards caught up with it, since the next one, the C7, launched in 2012, reverted to the usual V8 engine, which is more reasonable, in fact, 20 horsepower less powerful. The RS6 Avant, third of its kind, still produced 560 hp.

But Audi still enforced the hierarchy, since a performance version with 605 hp and 700 Nm of torque was introduced to put the sport's exclusivity back on track and thus surpass the symbolic 4-second mark (3.9 seconds exactly from 0 to 100 km/h).

Today, the fourth generation, the C8, is appearing with an even better sports pedigree. Did we doubt it? No, not really. First of all, the TFSI V8 now delivers 600 bhp with 800 Nm of torque, 40 bhp more than the previous model.

The car's responsiveness has been improved thanks to the addition of two larger turbos (61 mm instead of 58 mm), whose boost pressure has increased by 0.2 bar, or 1.4 bar in total.

In addition, the new V8 is equipped with a 48-volt MHEV starter-alternator with automatic cylinder cut-off, capable of regenerating up to 12 kW and reducing fuel consumption by 0.8 liters per 100 km.

The new sporty station wagon now reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and can reach top speeds of up to 305 km/h in a matter of seconds. It's more commonly known as a super sports car!

Exceptional charisma

The Audi RS 6 Avant is the first RS model to adopt the new Audi Sport styling language: a ribbed bonnet with a power dome, Audi Matrix LED HD headlamps with laser technology, a frameless single-frame grille, a muscular rear end with two chromed exhaust tailpipes, sculpted air intakes...

Compared to its classic counterpart, the bodywork has been lowered by 20 millimeters and widened by about 40 millimeters on each side.

Muscular in its lines, but not only, the Audi RS 6 Avant stands on imposing 22-inch wheels. Upfront, the sharp headlamp optics feature Audi Matrix HD LED technology with laser illumination and dynamic turn signals.

The locking/unlocking feature is accompanied by an amazing play of light for a very distinctive effect. From the side, the ultra-sporty family wagon is even tauter and athletic.

In reference to its racing origins, the Audi RS 6 Avant has its wings widened and even more pronounced, like the "Quattro blisters" of the first Audi Quattro cars.

When performance rhymes with efficiency

Audi-RS-6-Avant-Engine

The 600 hp 4.0 TFSI bi-turbo V8 engine is accompanied by a lightweight, "mild-hybrid" hybridization system that uses a belt-driven starter and 48-volt battery. All of this allows for the intelligent recovery, storage, and distribution of electrical energy.

For example, if you release the pedal between 55 and 130 km/h, the engine can be deactivated and switched to "freewheel" mode to reduce fuel consumption.

As an added bonus, an electric supercharger assists the turbocharger at low revs to boost engine power when conditions demand it, such as when starting on a hill.

For maximum agility and safety, the standard Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system distributes power to both axles. Optional packages are available to enhance the dynamic driving dynamics of your Audi RS 6 Avant.

Designed for unparalleled comfort on long journeys and dynamic driving experience, the Audi RS 6 Avant reveals its many facets via the Audi drive select.

As standard, the system allows you to configure your vehicle (chassis, steering, suspension, accelerator) in different modes: auto, dynamic, comfort.

Depending on road conditions and your mood, you can enjoy different driving experiences.

The optionally available Sport RS plus suspension with Dynamic Ride Control guarantees you perfect precision even on winding roads, while at the same time considerably reducing pitching and rolling movements.

Space for your desires

The Audi RS 6 Avant opens up the field of possibilities and satisfies all your travel desires with a generous 565-liter cargo volume.

That leaves plenty of room for those impromptu weekends. The standard tailgate is equipped with a sensor that allows you to load the sporty station wagon even when you have your hands full.

A simple movement of the foot is all it takes to open the tailgate.
